Working with Universities & Academia

Leadership ability is particularly important in the university sector because academic leaders don’t have the same ability to direct their staff as may be the case in the private sector (though even there that isn’t the best way).

We can strengthen your individual and collective leadership in many ways.

Transforming Universities & Academia

I have worked with university leaders for many years and can assist in a variety of ways, all aimed at strengthening your institution’s ability to ride the current wave in the sector, whatever that may be – tighter funding at the present time.

Some of the outcomes or resources you may be looking for are:

  • A trusted advisor
  • Development of your senior team
  • Leadership development more generally
  • Strategy development and implementation
  • Culture change
  • Help with succession
  • Solutions to development needs of team members, such as Strategic Leadership, Stepping Up to Leadership, and Professional Relationship Skills and Influence
  • Facilitation of large group events
  • Resolution of disharmony and conflict within your leadership team
  • Help with formation of relationships and research collaborations with industry
  • Increasing research grant income, academic achievement and impact

Testimonials

“Addressing our problems, within a framework, from an alongside position, rather than imposing some abstract thinking from a different context”

Professor Dame Muffy Calder FREng FRSE, Head of College and Vice Principal, University of Glasgow

“One of the skills I would associate with David is his fantastic ability to rapidly take in a lot of detailed information and quickly make sense of it, enabling the flow of the session to be maintained. He is well-known for this.”

Caryn Hughes, Partnerships and Innovation Lead, The Pandemic Institute

“Asks the right questions and provides practical solutions.”

Prof. Chris Pearce, Vice Principal (Research and Knowledge Exchange), University of Glasgow

“David’s ability to associate themes and encourage peer learning, sometimes around sensitive issues, speaks to David’s expertise as an extremely skilful facilitator and chair of group coaching sessions.”

Dr Jennifer Rao-Williams, Design Fellow Knowledge Exchange + Impact I Creator

“David ‘gets’ people – what makes them tick, how relationships work (and don’t), and offers deep insight and expertise into how self-awareness can help improve our relationships to others, and the quality of our work-lives. Gently challenging and with a compassionate and light approach, David is a great ally to have when looking for a catalyst for change.”

What’s different about the support you provide?

It’s informed by a highly-developed expertise in human development and interaction combined with the knowledge and experience of an operational career. That combination makes a radical difference in the appropriate circumstances. It’s simply more powerful than the alternatives. My work also draws on experience in both academia and industry.

Do you work with professional services as well as academics?

Yes. Some engagements are entirely for professional services teams. Others include professional services people within a wider scope.

How do you charge for an engagement?

In whatever way works best for you. We can use an agreed day rate applied to hours recorded or use a retainer arrangement in which an agreed minimum amount of support is provided for a fixed monthly fee. The latter option is often easier for university procurement processes. If the scope of work is clear enough, we can also agree a fixed fee in advance. Generally, we invoice monthly for work done in the month.
